4 Bad Decisions for Fast Weight Loss

Startling new research shows that many people who want to lose weight make some of the worst decisions when they are thinking about how to eat and diet. These decisions can sabotage their weight loss efforts and even contribute to health problems down the road.

While it may be tempting to try fad diets or diet pills in order to quickly shed those extra pounds, it’s important to avoid making these common bad decisions for fast weight loss at all costs!

Here are four bad decisions you should never make if you’re trying to lose weight quickly.

Binge Eating

People trying to lose weight often fall into a pattern of extreme dieting, then binging. After days or weeks of depriving themselves, they are so hungry that they give in and eat everything in sight—often consuming an amount of calories that is far greater than any other day.

This extreme cycle leads to both a lack of energy and self-discipline. To lose weight fast but safely, it’s best to avoid restrictive diets altogether. Instead, you can start with a simple rule: Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full.

Fad Diets

FAD diets refer to diets that restrict your calories too low or incorporate overly restrictive rules that are hard to stick to. Some FAD diets include the Whole30, Keto diet, intermittent fasting (when done incorrectly), SIRT food diet and OMAD.

When you go on a fad diet, it’s unlikely you’ll stick with it and as a result, you’ll gain back any weight that was lost. In fact, most people who go on these diets end up gaining more weight than they lost because they never actually follow healthy eating principles. If you want to lose weight safely, choose a diet that matches your goals and that teaches you how to eat healthy foods and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Then consider adjusting it as necessary over time so that it continues to meet your needs.

Weight Loss Pills

When diet and exercise aren’t enough, it’s tempting to try weight loss pills. After all, they’re a quick fix—you take them for a few days or weeks, lose a few pounds (or maybe more), and then just stop taking them. The problem is that when you stop taking these diet pills, you will most likely gain back any weight you lost plus some extra pounds. And while they may provide momentary weight loss results, look at all of those unknowns on the packaging: What are these pills made of? How were they tested? Are there side effects? Are there long-term effects?

Some of these so-called magic supplements have been found to contain prescription drugs or illegal substances! Best case scenario—they don’t work. Worst case scenario—they can cause dangerous side effects. Be sure to do your research before trying anything new or speak to a doctor.

Cheat days

A cheat day may sound like a great idea, but science says it’s likely to cause you to gain more weight in the long run. The basic idea behind cheat days is that you eat whatever you want and then go back to your healthy diet.

In theory, if you’re eating well most of the time, cheat days shouldn’t be that big of a deal. But think about what happens when a person goes off their diet: They usually aren’t eating well 100 percent of the time—and so when they do cheat, they may eat enough calories and fat to sabotage all their hard work from previous days.

Additionally, people tend to use cheat days as an excuse to pig out on unhealthy food. Cheat days can also make you feel like your entire day has been wasted (even though it hasn’t) and leave you disappointed with your progress. Therefore, instead of cheat days, simply consume a balanced diet and have snacks in moderation throughout the week. By including your snacks within your diet and strategically placing them where you most need them, you stay in control of your cravings, calories and your progress.


The most common responses I get when people talk about fast weight loss are I’ll do anything to lose 20 pounds in a month. While I agree that focusing on health, instead of number on a scale, is a far more important goal, there’s no denying that losing significant amounts of weight in a short amount of time can be enticing.. it is best avoided.
