What is Green coffee Extract?
Green Coffee Extract (GCE) is a supplement derived from Green Coffee Beans. This supplement contains high levels of Chlorogenic Acid which is thought to help with weight loss. However, can Green-Coffee extract help you lose weight?
How does Green Coffee help you lose weight?
Whilst understanding that carbohydrates themselves do not cause weight gain, GCE limits our body’s ability to absorb carbohydrates. Therefore, you would consume fewer calories. When we consume fewer calories, our body is forced to tap into our fat stores to fuel our daily tasks or exercise.
However, can Green Coffee extract help you lose weight? Let’s take a look at some studies.
Green Coffee Extract case study
One study conducted by ET (2007) examined the effects of chlorogenic acid enriched coffee on glucose absorption on weight loss. When we ingest carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose (sugars) and absorbed into the blood stream.
The study demonstrated that instant coffee which was enriched with chlorogenic acid reduced absorption of glucose by 6.9%. This was not observed with other coffee products.
To validate the previous study
To ensure validity of the previous study, ET conducted another randomized study with 30 participants over 12 weeks. The average weight loss using the chlorogenic acid enriched coffee vs ordinary instant coffee were 5.4kg and 1.7kg.
Green Coffee Extract dosage
Dosage of this supplement depends on a few factors, for example your age, health and even medical conditions. There is not enough information to say what the optimum dosage is.
However, there are some basic guidelines you can follow to see how much chlorogenic acid is within a supplement (Patel et al, 2018):
- 1200-3000mg of GCE supplement, you will get roughly 10% Chlorogenic acid
- 600-1500mg of GCE supplement, you will get roughly 20% Chlorogenic Acid
- 240-600mg of GCE supplement, you will get roughly 50% Chlorogenic Acid
Please REMEMBER there is no optimum dosage that we know of. However, the more chlorogenic acid a supplement contains, the more severe side effects you may experience. Please contact your doctor or a GP before using this supplement.
How to drink Green Coffee?
You begin the preparation by placing the green coffee into a cup and power hot water over it, just like you would with a normal coffee. Once you have done that, leave it for a moment to ensure you get the strength you desire. After you have waited, pour the green coffee through a fine sieve to filter the broth. Voila! The drink is now ready.
Green Coffee Extract Side Effects
Side Effects of Green Coffee extract include an upset stomach, stomach cramps, and excessive wind.
It is important to know that there are some conditions that may be worsened with the use of Green Coffee Extract (webmd.com, 2019)
- Bleeding disorders – the symptoms may get worse
- Glaucoma – caffeine in green coffee may cause or worsen the symptoms of Glaucoma. This condition causes a buildup of pressure inside the eye.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – this is a condition that causes bowel inflammation. Caffeine can agitate the inflamed bowel even more causing some uncomfortable symptoms
- High Blood Pressure – may increase the blood pressure even further.
- High Cholesterol – may increase cholesterol even further
Green Coffee extract has shown some promising results. So, we have closely examined products and their ingredients which led us to this product. Does Green Coffee Extract actually work? So, the results are quite promising, we can assume that if you use green coffee extract for a lengthy period it may assist in weight loss, but this is a much lower effect on fat burn compared to some other products on the market.
