What is Caralluma Fimbriata?
This is an edible cactus used by tribal Indians to suppress hunger and enhance endurance which can be found as an oral supplement. The plant grows in Africa, Middle East and Southern Europe, like Canary Islands.
There are various ways of consuming this plant, some people choose to eat it raw or simply boiled. Others cook it and add it to chutneys or pickles. But in most cases, due its foul smell people choose to consume it in a supplement form.
What is Caralluma Fimbriata used for?
Historically, it was used as a famine food, thirst quencher and appetite suppressant. Currently, Caralluma Fimbriata is being sold as a fat burning supplement, it is claimed that it will help people with weight loss, endurance and thirst. Now, this seems quite big on promises, but does it deliver on those promises?
Caralluma Fimbriata case studies
There is research suggesting its effectiveness. For instance, research conducted by R Kuriyan (2007) studied the effect of Caralluma Fimbriata on appetite in adult women and men. 50 men and women aged 25-60 were randomly assigned into a placebo or experimental group, the experimental group received 1g of Caralluma extract per day for 60 days. The results at the end of 60 days showed significant decline in waist circumference and hunger levels compared to the placebo group. Although this shows that the Caralluma extract may be effective, it’s important to know that the results between placebo and experimental group were quite small.
Another study done by J Griggs (2019) of appetite control using Caralluma extract was tested on a girl with Prader-Willi Syndrome. This condition causes a person to feel constantly hungry, and consequently feel the need to binge eat and never feeling full. The girl developed this condition at the age of 2, and the Caralluma extract was supplemented to her for 12 years. The results demonstrated that the girl’s appetite was within norm. Her blood count, liver function and thyroid were all within norm. Based on this research example, Caralluma Fimbrata extract can help with appetite.
What are the risks and warnings?
Caralluma Fimbriata is a safe supplement to take. However, when you first begin to take it, you may experience stomach pains, constipation and other gastrointestinal issues. Therefore, if these side effects don’t stop after 1 week of usage, you should consider speaking your doctor or gp.
