There are many different aspects of how to live a healthy lifestyle. Staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and eating well are just some of the ways that you can attain this goal. However, it is not always easy to know how to get started on this journey toward living healthier. If you want some tips for how to start your new healthy lifestyle today, keep reading!

What is a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle is all about making choices that promote your overall well-being. This means eating nutritious foods, getting enough exercise, and getting enough sleep. It also means staying hydrated and avoiding harmful behaviors, such as smoking and excessive drinking.

There are many different ways to achieve a healthy lifestyle. If you’re not sure where to start, try making simple changes in your diet and exercise routine. Gradually make more healthy choices until they become second nature to you. Eventually, living a healthy lifestyle will become easy and natural for you.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as what may be healthy for one person might not be healthy for another. For example, if you take a look at a person who is 6ft 1 and weighs 190kg and a person who is 5ft 8 and weighs 95kg, their calories intake and nutritional requirements will be different. What one person can eat to lose weight another one can eat the same and gain weight.

However, there are some general things that can be said about how to live a healthy lifestyle.

1. Start by setting goals for yourself

Setting goals is a very important part of living a healthy lifestyle. When you have a goal to work towards, it’s easier to stay motivated and on track. However, it’s important to set small goals rather than trying to overhaul your entire life overnight. This can be discouraging and is likely to lead to failure.

Instead, start by setting small goals that are achievable and easy to accomplish. For example, if your goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables, begin by adding a piece of fruit or a bowl of different fruits to your diet each day. Once you’ve mastered that goal, move on to adding two servings per day. Gradually increase the amount of fruit that you eat until you’re eating the recommended amount for your health needs. Most average adults need 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

This can be split like this:

  • Your goal is to eat at least three portions of vegetables – two side salads, one for breakfast and lunch, and mixed veggies with your dinner.
  • Then, include 2 portions of fruit per day which can simply include 1 apple and 1 banana

Another example is exercising. If you’ve never exercised before, your goal may be to get yourself onto an exercise routine. Work up to this by starting with short walks after dinner each night or using the stairs instead of elevators at work. When you feel ready, consider joining a gym for more fitness options or join a fitness class.

When setting goals, make sure they are realistic and achievable in order for them to have lasting effects on how you live your life long-term. Small goals that are easily manageable will help increase motivation levels over time as well as self-esteem and drive greater results.

2. Make a list of healthy foods you enjoy and plan your meals accordingly

Another way to ensure you stick with living a healthy lifestyle is planning ahead and making sure that you enjoy how you eat.

To begin, make a list of all the healthy foods you enjoy. This could be anything from fruits and vegetables to lean protein sources like fish, chicken, or tofu. Once you have a comprehensive list, begin planning your meals around these items. This will help make sure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs while also enjoying what you eat.

If you find that some of the healthier options on your list are not as tasty as others, consider using seasonings and sauces to enhance their flavour. There are many different flavours out there that can compliment most healthy foods. For example, try adding fresh herbs to grilled chicken or fish or olive oil and balsamic vinegar to salads.

It’s important to find a balance between eating nutritious foods that taste good and eating foods that you don’t enjoy just because they’re healthy. This is more likely to lead to failure and will make it harder for you to stick with living a healthy lifestyle in the long-term.

Finding a way to include your favourite, healthy foods into every meal can help make this transition easier as well as more enjoyable.

3. Get exercise – try to walk or bike ride at least once per day

One of the most important aspects of living a healthy lifestyle is getting regular exercise. This doesn’t mean that you have to go to the gym and spend hours working out each day. In fact, starting with just 20-30 minutes per day can make a big difference in your overall health.

A great way to get started with exercising is by doing something you enjoy. If you don’t like running or lifting weights, there are plenty of other activities that can help get your heart rate up and improve your fitness levels. Try going for walks or bike rides outdoors, swimming, playing sports such as tennis or soccer, dancing, or using an elliptical machine at the gym.

The key is to find something that you will stick with for long term rather than forcing yourself to do something for a few days and giving up before you get the chance to see results.

4. Keep track of the food you eat with an app like MyFitnessPal

One of the best ways to see how well you’re doing with living a healthy lifestyle is by tracking your food intake. This can be easily done using an app like MyFitnessPal which logs all the food you eat throughout the day.

Not only does this help you stay accountable for what you’re eating, but it can also show you where you may need to make some changes. If you find that you’re not meeting your daily calorie or nutrient goals, then focus on incorporating more healthy foods into your diet.

On the other hand, if you’re exceeding your goals for the day, then try cutting back on portion sizes or exercising more to burn off any extra calories. Tracking your food intake in this way can be really helpful with finding a balance between how you eat and how much.

5. Find someone who will hold you accountable for your progress, whether it’s a friend, family member, or personal trainer

Finally, one of the best ways to stick with living a healthy lifestyle is by finding someone who will hold you accountable. Whether it’s your partner or a good friend, having somebody there for support can be really beneficial in helping you succeed on this journey.

If possible, try choosing somebody that has already achieved all of their health goals so they know how important these changes are and how to go about making them happen. If not, then simply asking somebody close to you if they’re willing to help keep track of how well you’ve been doing can make all the difference in staying motivated over time. Having another person involved makes the process more fun as well as educational because every day becomes an opportunity for both people to learn more about what works.

6. Reward yourself when you reach your goals! You deserve it!

Some people find it much easier to stick to their goals when they have an incentive or reward waiting on the other side. Whether you choose something as simple as your favourite meal at your favourite restaurant or go all out and buy yourself a new piece of tech gear – regularly rewarding yourself is one of the best ways to stay motivated over time.

The key here is to only reward yourself with something that isn’t going to sabotage your efforts by adding too many extra calories onto what you’ve already consumed throughout the day. For example, if you burn 500 calories through exercise then don’t come home and eat another 500 in food. This is totally counterproductive.
